Senate Approves N2.285tn FCT Budget for 2026

On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate passed the 2026 statutory appropriation bill for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), approving a total expenditure of N2.285 trillion. The budget was presented by Austin Akobundu, the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, on behalf of the committee chairman, Ibrahim Bomai.

The budget includes N165.7 billion for personnel costs, N378.2 billion for overhead costs, and N1.741 trillion earmarked for capital expenditure, with 76.19% of the total allocation dedicated to capital projects. The recurrent expenditure accounts for 23.8%.

The Senate's decision follows extensive deliberations and aims to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and security in Abuja, particularly in response to rapid population growth in recent years. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau praised the budget as balanced and development-oriented.

Senator Abdul Ningi highlighted the appropriations as responsive to previous concerns raised during oversight engagements with the FCTA. The budget is now set for presidential assent.
