Senate Investigates Kano Market Fire Causing N100 Billion Loss

The Nigerian Senate is probing the recent fire outbreak at Singer Market in Kano State, which resulted in the destruction of goods worth N100 billion. On Tuesday, the Senate directed its Committee on Interior to investigate the underlying causes of the inferno and submit findings within four weeks.

The Senate also urged the market management to redesign the layout to reduce future fire vulnerabilities. The motion was co-sponsored by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Senator Kawu Samaila.

President Bola Tinubu approved a N5 billion donation to support victims, while the Nigerian Governors' Forum contributed N3 billion. The Senate called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to assess the damage and provide relief to affected traders, as seven individuals are reportedly missing.

Senator Aliyu Wadada emphasized the need to identify root causes to prevent future incidents, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio appealed for assistance to help victims recover.
