Kano Forms Committee to Disburse N8bn to Fire Victims

The Kano State Government has inaugurated a 23-member high-level committee to oversee the disbursement of N8 billion in financial assistance to victims affected by the devastating fire at Singer Market. The fire, which occurred on February 14, 2026, and continued into February 15, destroyed a significant portion of the market, impacting thousands of small and medium-scale traders and causing extensive economic damage estimated in billions of naira.

The committee, led by Secretary to the State Government Alhaji Umar Faruq, includes representatives from relevant ministries, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kano Emir Council. Its mandate is to assess the damage, ensure transparent fund distribution, and develop a framework for timely financial assistance.

Earlier, affected traders received N200 million in immediate cash support. The committee will also review safety challenges within the market to prevent future incidents.
