Senate Rejects Military Spending Probe Amid Insecurity

On Wednesday, the Nigerian Senate declined a proposal to investigate military spending, choosing instead to concentrate on addressing escalating insecurity following recent bandit attacks in Oyo and Kwara States. Lawmakers urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue victims held captive and to expand safe school initiatives.

The discussion was prompted by the abduction of 49 individuals, including schoolteacher Michael Oyedokun and several toddlers, raising alarms about the increasing frequency of bandit attacks in Kwara North. Senator Adam Oshiomhole proposed a thorough review of military expenditures, questioning the effectiveness of past Senate resolutions on security.

He emphasized the need for greater scrutiny of security funding, citing persistent complaints about inadequate equipment and unpaid allowances for security personnel. Despite these concerns, Oshiomhole's attempt to include a probe into military spending in the Senate's resolutions failed to gain support.

The Senate ultimately adopted a resolution to address the security situation without approving an investigation into military expenditures.
