Nigerian Senate Adopts Hybrid Election Result Transmission System Amid Controversy

The Nigerian Senate recently amended the Electoral Act to permit the simultaneous use of electronic and manual transmission of election results. This amendment, amidst controversies, includes safeguards to address potential technical glitches that could impede electronic transmission.

The Senate reaffirmed its preference for electronic transmission but introduced a backup plan involving manual documentation. The amendment specifies that the hard copy form EC8, containing results recorded at polling units, will serve as the primary source for collation.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe's motion to call for a division on the Senate's position was withdrawn following a formal request by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This decision comes after widespread public debates and protests regarding the efficacy of real-time electronic result transmission.
