Senate Retains Manual Backup for Election Results

The Nigerian Senate has retained the manual backup for election results as part of the Electoral Act Amendment. This decision was reached after a tense plenary session where 55 senators voted in favor of maintaining the manual backup clause, while 15 lawmakers, including Enyinnaya Abaribe from Abia South, opposed it.

The Senate's decision follows a series of debates regarding Clause 60 of the Electoral Act, which pertains to the transmission and collation of election results. Abaribe had previously attempted to challenge this clause during an emergency plenary session but later withdrew his demand.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio reminded colleagues of Abaribe's earlier failed attempt, which had drawn public criticism and mockery on social media. The Senate's decision to retain the manual backup reflects ongoing divisions within the chamber regarding electoral processes in Nigeria.
