Senate Calls NMDPRA, NNPC Leaders Over Petrol Import Discrepancies

The Senate has summoned the heads of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, and Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) following significant discrepancies in petrol import figures for 2022 and 2023. During a hearing on the NEITI Oil and Gas Industry Audit Report, Uzoamaka Ugwu-Ojobe, Deputy Director of NMDPRA, stated that Nigeria imported 3.29 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in 2022 and 6.02 billion litres in 2023.
In contrast, NNPC's records indicated imports of 6.27 billion litres in 2022 and 3.88 billion litres in 2023. Senators, including Abdul Ningi and Dayo Faduyile, expressed concerns over the discrepancies, with Ningi noting that the gap exceeded 50 percent in one year.
The committee chairman, Hassan Dankwabo, deemed NMDPRA's explanation unacceptable and announced a joint meeting to reconcile the figures and investigate potential fraud or record-keeping issues.
