Senate Critiques Economic Team on 2026 Budget Issues

The Senate's Committee on Appropriations, chaired by Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola from Ogun West, engaged in a critical session with the economic team regarding the implementation of the ₦58.472 trillion budget for 2026. The committee raised concerns about the unrealistic assumptions underlying the budget, which have led to poor implementation and minimal capital releases across various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

Mr. Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, was present to address these issues.

The committee emphasized that the budget's assumptions do not translate into realistic funding for projects, which could lead to serious financial management problems. Dr.

Zacch Adedeji, the chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service, was also present, and the committee reminded him that the budget document originates from the executive branch, indicating a need for accountability in budget execution.
