Senate Issues Warning to MDAs Over Non-Compliance

The Nigerian Senate has issued a warning to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and Government-Owned Enterprises (GOEs) that fail to appear before Senate committees despite repeated invitations. This warning followed a motion sponsored by Senator Sani Musa, who emphasized the National Assembly's constitutional authority under Sections 88 and 89 to investigate these entities.

The Senate reaffirmed its oversight responsibilities and directed all government agencies to comply with invitations. It called on Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and Head of the Civil Service, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, to ensure compliance.

Senator Mohammed Monguno described the motion as overdue, while Senator Abdul Ningi suggested issuing a final warning before informing President Bola Tinubu of non-compliance. Ningi also proposed withholding budgetary appropriations from non-compliant agencies.

Senator Orji Kalu urged the National Assembly to assert its powers without waiting for presidential intervention, highlighting the need for accountability among government agencies.
