Senate Warns MDAs of Sanctions for Non-Compliance

The Senate of Nigeria, led by Senate President Dr. Godswill Obot Akpabio, has issued a warning to all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and Government-owned Enterprises (GOEs) regarding their failure to respond to invitations from the National Assembly.

This warning was prompted by a motion sponsored by Senator Sani Musa, which highlighted the ongoing refusal of several MDAs and GOEs to appear before Senate committees despite repeated requests. Senator Musa referenced Sections 88 and 89 of the 1999 Constitution, which empower the National Assembly to investigate the activities of these agencies.

The Senate reaffirmed its constitutional authority and directed all government agencies to comply with invitations. It also called on Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume and Head of the Civil Service Didi Esther Walson-Jack to ensure compliance.

Senator Mohammed Monguno emphasized the need for legislative independence, while Senator Abdul Ningi suggested issuing a final warning to non-compliant agencies and considering budgetary consequences. Senator Orji Kalu noted that the National Assembly was being taken for granted.
