Nigerian Senate Uncovers N300 Billion Unaccounted Crude Oil Proceeds, Reveals System Lapses

The Nigerian Senate's ad hoc committee investigating crude oil theft in the Niger Delta has revealed the discovery of N300 billion in unaccounted crude oil proceeds. The interim report detailed significant discrepancies and weak oversight mechanisms that enabled large-scale diversions of Nigeria's crude oil revenue.

The discrepancies included mismatches in crude oil sales, unaccounted funds amounting to $22 billion, and a shortfall of $81 billion in declared receipts by the NNPC. The report also identified faulty measurement systems, weak regulatory oversight, and poor coordination among government agencies as major factors enabling crude oil theft.

Urgent actions are recommended to track, trace, and recover the stolen funds for the country's benefit.
