Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team

The Senegal Football Federation announced the appointment of Patrick Vieira as the head coach of the Senegal national football team on Tuesday. The 50-year-old Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, who was sacked in July after Senegal's underwhelming performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the round of 32 but lost to Belgium 3-2 in extra time after leading by two goals.

The FSF's Emergency Committee unanimously selected Vieira during a meeting on Monday, emphasizing their commitment to assembling a high-level technical staff as Senegal prepares for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Vieira, who has been without a job since November of the previous year, will take on his first role as a national team manager and is set to lead Senegal against Mozambique, Sudan, and Ethiopia in Group J of the qualifiers.

Discussions regarding his administrative and contractual arrangements are ongoing.
