Senegal's Speaker Predicts World Cup Victory Over France

Ousmane Sonko, the Speaker of Senegal's National Assembly, predicted Senegal's victory over France in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In an interview with RFI in Dakar on Monday, Sonko stated that whichever team wins, Africa will be celebrated.

He highlighted the presence of players of African origin in the French squad and expressed hope that Senegal would win, reflecting the aspirations of every Senegalese person. Sonko's remarks prompted a broader discussion on Africa's contributions to global talent and the importance of recognizing Africa's human potential.

He emphasized the need for Africans to embrace their natural and human resources, particularly in light of the continent's rapidly growing young population. Sonko's comments came amid discussions on Senegal's domestic political and economic challenges, as well as regional security issues.

He was elected Speaker of Senegal's National Assembly on May 1, following the removal of Prime Minister Bassirou Diomaye Fay.
