Shaibu Advocates Private Sector Role in Sports Medicine

Philip Shaibu, the current Deputy Governor of Edo State, expressed the importance of public-private partnerships in revitalizing sports medicine in Nigeria during a courtesy visit from a delegation of Alliance Hospital led by its Medical Director, Dr. Christoph Otabor, in Abuja.

Shaibu highlighted the long-standing relationship between the National Institute for Sports and Alliance Hospital, noting the hospital's efficiency and professional reputation. He lamented the decline in mandatory medical screenings for athletes, which has contributed to injuries and career setbacks.

Shaibu disclosed plans to upgrade the institute's medical facilities, including constructing a new medical complex and establishing satellite medical units across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. He aims to create a sustainable system that operates efficiently beyond government funding.

Dr. Otabor emphasized the need for investment in sports medicine and the potential for collaboration with the private sector to enhance athlete health and welfare in Nigeria.
