Shettima Attends Benin Presidential Inauguration

Kashim Shettima, the Vice President of Nigeria, departed from Abuja to attend the presidential inauguration in Benin Republic scheduled for May 24, 2026. The ceremony will take place at the presidential palace in Cotonou, marking the commencement of a seven-year constitutional term for President Wadagni, who will take the oath of office.

Vice President Mariam Chabi Talata will also be inaugurated during this event. The inauguration will follow traditional state protocols, including the official handover of power, transfer of the presidential sash, and insignia at the presidential palace in Cotonou.

The motorcade will proceed to Charlie de Gaulle Stadium in Porto Novo. Shettima's attendance underscores the deep historical, socio-cultural, and economic ties between Nigeria and Benin, despite modern bilateral relations being frequently defined by border security, trade policies, and energy cooperation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to assuming office despite challenges, and Shettima will be accompanied by senior aides and top government officials on his trip.
