Shettima Advocates for Africa's UN Representation Reform

On September 25, Vice-President Kashim Shettima delivered President Bola Tinubu’s address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He warned against propaganda that protects aggressors from justice, asserting that it undermines the UN's essence.

Shettima called for a radical reform of the global order, particularly the restructuring of the UN Security Council to grant Africa permanent representation. He argued that the current power distribution reflects 1945 and does not align with modern realities, demanding at least two permanent seats for Africa, including veto rights, and five non-permanent seats.

Shettima urged an end to global conflicts, advocating for dialogue and mutual respect. He reiterated Nigeria's readiness to enhance its role in peacekeeping across Africa, citing past contributions in various countries.

Additionally, he addressed climate change, rejecting the idea that development and climate action are mutually exclusive, and reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to the Paris Agreement and achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.
