Shettima Advocates for Africa's Inclusion in UN Security Council

Kashim Shettima, the Vice President of Nigeria, stated that global governance lacks legitimacy due to Africa's exclusion from the UN Security Council. He made these remarks during a meeting with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J.

Mohammed on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, United States. Shettima praised UN Secretary-General António Guterres for advocating a more representative Security Council, highlighting his statement that a 21st-century Council without permanent African representation is “unjust and indefensible.” He asserted that Nigeria would continue to support reforms aimed at making international institutions more representative and responsive to contemporary geopolitical realities.

Shettima also commended Amina Mohammed for her contributions to multilateral diplomacy and sustainable development, expressing Nigeria's commitment to restoring trust among nations and addressing issues of hunger, violence, and exclusion. Mohammed thanked Nigeria and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration for their support of the UN.
