Sickle Cell Group Advocates for Subsidized Treatment in Lafia

The Sickle Cell Group, under the leadership of President Abubakar Akwe, appealed for subsidized treatment for sickle cell patients during a courtesy visit to Dr. Hassan Ikrama, the Chief Medical Director of a hospital in Lafia. Akwe emphasized that sickle cell anaemia poses a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with many patients unable to afford necessary treatments.

He announced plans for the club to engage the Nasarawa State House of Assembly to advocate for legislation that would mandate premarital sickle cell screening and ensure subsidized treatment for those affected. This initiative is part of the club's broader efforts to enhance prevention, awareness, and healthcare for individuals living with sickle cell disease.

Akwe also noted that the current leadership of the club was elected on June 19, 2026, with a focus on improving the welfare and healthcare of sickle cell patients.
