Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria Advocates for Local Solutions

The Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, represented by National Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Annette Akinsete, called for Nigeria to spearhead the development of home-grown solutions to sickle cell disease. This appeal was made during the launch of OneSCD, a global partnership aimed at enhancing equity and transforming sickle cell care, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

Akinsete highlighted that over 25 percent of Nigerians carry the sickle cell trait, equating to more than 40 million healthy carriers. She asserted that Nigeria should be recognized as a demonstration country for transformative sickle care due to its significant sickle cell burden and established advocacy.

Akinsete emphasized the need for countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, to be seen as partners in the global sickle cell response, contributing to the design and implementation of tailored interventions. The OneSCD initiative, launched by the Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with global health partners, aims to improve coordination and access to quality care for sickle cell disease.
