Sirleaf Reflects on Leadership and Corruption at Lecture

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the former President of Liberia and Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state, recounted her experiences in leadership during a Legacy and Leadership Lecture held in honor of the late Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, Captain Idahosa Wells Okunbo, marking the fifth anniversary of his death. Sirleaf stated that true leadership involves making tough and unpopular decisions to confront corruption and injustice.

She highlighted that leadership should not be measured by power but by the positive impact on lives through responsible governance. Sirleaf emphasized the necessity for leaders to speak truth to power, withstand criticism, and remain committed to transparency and accountability.

She noted the challenges posed by social media and artificial intelligence in discerning truth. Sirleaf also reflected on Captain Okunbo’s legacy, stating that Africa needs leaders who utilize their influence for the greater good rather than merely possessing power.
