SMEDAN Advocates for Traditional Rulers' Involvement in Development

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), led by Director-General Mr. Charles Odii, called for enhanced collaboration between traditional institutions and government agencies to promote food security, wealth creation, and national development. Speaking at the 2026 Ulefunta Annual Lecture in Akure, Ondo State, Odii emphasized that government policies often fail without community input, particularly at the grassroots level.

He stated that traditional rulers possess essential knowledge about their communities, which should be integrated into development planning. Odii announced the launch of the Community Enterprise Development Programme aimed at involving traditional institutions in all stages of development projects.

He highlighted the need to advance agriculture beyond subsistence farming by developing the entire value chain. The Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, supported the initiative, noting its goal to connect rural dwellers and young entrepreneurs with funding and development opportunities.
