Sokoto: ASUU issues strike ultimatum to FG over unmet demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Sokoto has issued a strike ultimatum to the Federal Government due to unmet demands. The union threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if the government fails to resolve outstanding issues affecting Nigerian universities.

Members of the union from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State University, and Shehu Shagari University of Education staged a protest, demanding urgent government intervention. The Chairman of the UDUS chapter, Nurudeen Almustapha, urged the government to implement a committee report submitted in February 2025 to address funding, university autonomy, and academic freedom.

ASUU also rejected a proposed loan scheme for lecturers, calling it a "poisoned chalice" aimed at enslaving academics. The union demanded the release of withheld salaries and the signing of a renegotiated agreement that has been pending since 2021.
