Sokoto State's Nine-Smart Agenda Boosts Healthcare Reform

Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu has been recognized for his commitment to healthcare reform, particularly through the Nine-Smart Agenda aimed at revitalizing primary healthcare services in the state. This initiative has garnered praise from international organizations, including the NPHCDA, UNICEF, and the CDC, for its focus on improving healthcare delivery.

The state has faced significant challenges, including dilapidated structures and a shortage of healthcare personnel, particularly in rural areas. The recent 8th Sokoto State Government Council Health Meeting brought together high-level policymakers and stakeholders to discuss strategies for accelerating universal health coverage in Nigeria.

A notable announcement from the UNFPA included a commitment of 4.6 billion for healthcare delivery through 2026. Additionally, a new community midwifery scholarship bond scheme will provide full scholarships to 500 young women from hard-to-reach communities to study midwifery, addressing the critical shortage of skilled birth attendants in underserved areas.
