Renewed Xenophobic Violence in South Africa Sparks Tensions

South Africa has experienced a resurgence of xenophobic violence, primarily targeting immigrants from neighboring African countries, particularly Nigeria and Ghana. This violence, which has been a recurring issue over the past two decades, is fueled by economic frustrations and political instability.

In 2019, violence in Johannesburg and Pretoria resulted in at least 12 deaths and the looting and destruction of hundreds of businesses. In response to the recent attacks, Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, stated that the safety of Nigerian citizens in South Africa is at risk, prompting discussions about repatriation.

Ghana's government has also expressed concern, writing to the African Union to address the xenophobia issue. The South African government has been criticized for its inadequate response to xenophobic violence, which is seen as a significant challenge to African solidarity.

The situation remains tense, with warnings issued to citizens from countries like Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe to be vigilant against potential attacks.
