South Sudan Whistleblower Released After Two-Month Detention

Athorbey Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit, 51, a South Sudanese whistleblower who also holds Kenyan citizenship, was abducted at gunpoint by masked men in Nairobi two months ago while leaving a casino. His family reported that he had warned of threats to his life due to his exposure of corruption linked to South Sudan’s ruling elite.

Al-Gaddhaffy-Dit was transferred to a military facility in Juba, South Sudan, where he was held until his release on August 8, after investigations revealed no wrongdoing. His family expressed relief at his return but noted that they were never informed of the reasons for his abduction.

They also reported that his health had deteriorated during his detention, and he is currently receiving treatment in Kenya. Amnesty International had previously called for an investigation by the Kenyan government into his abduction, highlighting concerns over Kenya's complicity in allowing neighboring countries to abduct their citizens.
