Activist Sowore Accuses IGP of Serving Nigeria's Corrupt Elite

Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore has criticized IGP Kayode Egbetokun, accusing him of being an enforcer for Nigeria's corrupt and criminal elite. Sowore alleges that his arrest in October 2025 was a response to his investigative journalism rather than lawful police procedures.

He claims to have spent four days in detention at Kuje Correctional Center following his arrest on charges related to his involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest. Sowore denies initiating the protest but was detained alongside Nnamdi Kanu's lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, and brother during a visit to the FCT Police Command.

Sowore further alleges that his detention was linked to a Sahara Reporters exposé involving a visit to Pastor Jerry Uchechukwu and the Inspector General's office. He claims that CSP Ilyasu Barau warned him to stop calling Egbetokun illegal.

Sowore also accuses the police of corruption, citing the case of Jesam Michael, who alleges senior police officials' involvement in a Ponzi scheme. Despite being granted bail, Sowore claims he was physically attacked within the court premises and forcibly taken to Kuje Prison.

Sowore asserts that Nigeria lacks a technically appointed Inspector General of Police, describing the current system as serving corrupt interests.
