Sowore Criticizes Elumelu Over Arrest of Content Creators

Omoyele Sowore, a human rights activist and former presidential candidate, has publicly criticized Toni Elumelu, the chairman of UBA Group and Tony Elumelu Foundation, for allegedly using the police to arrest three individuals connected to viral claims regarding Elumelu's marital status. Sowore described the arrests as unjustifiable and unlawful, asserting that disputes over online content should be treated as civil matters rather than criminal offenses.

He emphasized that the public figure's marital status does not constitute a criminal offense warranting arrest. Sowore called for the immediate release of the detained individuals: Kingsley Akunemeih, Chigozi Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanoru.

This criticism followed a statement from UBA Group, which dismissed the viral claims as false and defamatory, asserting that the allegations were designed to mislead the public and damage Elumelu's reputation. UBA Group warned that legal action would be pursued against those disseminating such falsehoods.
