Spain to Deploy 13,000 Officers for Pope's Visit

Spain is set to deploy over 13,000 police officers for the visit of Pope Leo XIV from June 6 to 12, 2024. Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska announced this security measure to address multiple potential threats during the Pope's visit, which is expected to draw significant crowds in a historically Catholic nation.

This will be the first papal visit to Spain since 2011, when 11,000 police officers and 2,200 Civil Guard members were deployed. The security plan will include contributions from local forces in the northeastern region of Catalonia, particularly in Barcelona.

Marlaska highlighted various potential threats, including radical movements and social movements that may seize the opportunity to disrupt the event. The Pope will also inaugurate the tallest tower of the Sagrada Familia basilica, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of its architect, Antoni Gaudí.

The visit coincides with other major events, including a concert by Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny in Madrid.
