Oil Spills from Abandoned Wells Ravage Ogoniland, Delayed Cleanup Exacerbates Crisis

In August 2025, residents of Kpean community in Ogoniland, River State, were exposed to oil spills from abandoned wells, causing environmental and health hazards. The spills originated from the Yorla Oil Field, part of OML 11, which had been abandoned for decades.

The spills contaminated land and water bodies, affecting agriculture, water sources, and livelihoods. Despite the spills being detected, response agencies like NOSDRA lagged in cleanup efforts, leading to further environmental deterioration.

The delayed cleanup resulted in a fire outbreak at the spill site, deepening fears among the community. Subsequent spills in December 2025 worsened the situation, with cleanup efforts not commencing promptly.

The spills have led to health complications, deaths, and a decline in life expectancy in the community. Residents, including Mr.

Appolo and Gbene Ewoh, have called for urgent intervention and proper cleanup to mitigate the environmental and health crises in Ogoniland.
