CSOs Demand Conditions for Oil Resumption in Ogoniland

Civil society organizations (CSOs) have presented fresh conditions to the federal government for the resumption of oil exploration in Ogoniland, Rivers State. Among the conditions is the full implementation of the Ogoni Bill of Rights and adherence to the United Nations Environment Program's report on oil pollution in the area.

The coalition made these demands during a workshop organized by the Youth Environmental Advocacy Center (YEAC) Nigeria in Port Harcourt on Thursday. They emphasized the need to address environmental degradation and human rights abuses as essential steps to heal the wounds of the Ogoni people before oil production can resume.

The CSOs also called for the Ogoni people to have a stake in the ownership of oil companies operating in the region. The historical context includes the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others in 1995, following their activism against oil pollution and exploitation in Ogoniland.

The coalition's demands reflect ongoing concerns about the impact of oil production on local communities.
