Advocates Push for Zero Tolerance on Child Sexual Violence

Stakeholders in Gombe State have renewed their call for zero tolerance towards sexual violence against children, emphasizing that every child has the fundamental right to safety and dignity. During a roundtable discussion focused on protecting children's rights and strengthening response systems, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office Chief Nuzhat Rafiqu highlighted that timely reporting is critical, as delays can reduce the chances of securing medical evidence and achieving justice.

Rafiqu stressed the need to strengthen referral pathways for health workers, police, social welfare offices, and legal actors to respond effectively and compassionately. She called for a child-centered justice system that ensures fair proceedings without compounding trauma for survivors.

Additionally, Ladi Alabi, another UNICEF representative, urged traditional and religious leaders to challenge harmful norms and encourage families to support survivors rather than remain silent. The discussion aimed to raise public awareness and protect the privacy and dignity of survivors while advocating for educational investments to sustain community engagement.
