UNICEF Workshop Urges Media to Uphold Children's Rights

UNICEF, in collaboration with various stakeholders, organized a two-day workshop in Jigawa State on children's rights, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to laws governing these rights. The event, held on Wednesday and Thursday, featured Dr.

Karanv Singh, UNICEF's Chief Field Officer, who underscored the significance of ethical reporting on children's issues, particularly in North West Nigeria. He noted that irresponsible reporting can re-traumatize survivors and stigmatize children, urging media practitioners to use their platforms to advocate for children's rights.

Samuel Kalu, a UNICEF community specialist, stressed the importance of prioritizing accuracy in reporting to protect children's identities. The workshop included presentations on ethical principles in reporting and discussions on handling sensitive topics like child abuse.

Mr. Jumok Falayi, chairperson of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists, highlighted the need for journalists to adhere to the legal framework set by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission.

The workshop concluded with a call to action for journalists to prioritize children's rights in their reporting.
