Urgent Action Needed for FCT Disability Law Implementation

Stakeholders in the disability sector have raised concerns regarding the delay in the enactment and implementation of the disability law in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Peter Ogunmayin, the Executive Director of the Sustain Family Health Care Foundation (SFHF), highlighted that while awareness of disability issues is growing, a legal framework to support persons with disabilities in the FCT has yet to be fully enacted.

Ogunmayin noted that the FCT is still in the early stages of developing valid disability policies. Although there have been ongoing efforts to advance the process, including recent meetings with policymakers, the implementation remains stalled.

Ogunmayin emphasized the importance of media involvement in amplifying disability issues, lamenting a decline in media coverage compared to previous years. The stakeholders are urging for stronger media engagement to ensure that both the public and policymakers are aware of the existing policies and the need for their implementation.
