Ogun Stakeholders Demand Disability Law Amid Advocacy Efforts

Stakeholders in Ogun State have voiced their concerns regarding the lack of a disability law, despite significant advocacy efforts. This issue was highlighted during the launch of a technical action sustainable plan (TASP) aimed at ending violence against women with disabilities in Abeokuta.

Various organizations, including the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), attended the event. Julia Afachung, a senior program officer at CEWHIN, emphasized the heightened vulnerability of women with disabilities to sexual violence due to systemic discrimination and stigma.

Mr. Motunrayo Oniyid, Director of Legal Drafting at the Ogun State Ministry of Justice, noted that a disability law is currently under review and promised discussions with the Attorney General and other stakeholders.

Prof. Helen Bodund stressed the importance of implementing the TASP on the ground and proposed a structured review of the action plan within three to six months.
