Kaduna Ginger Project Reduces Child Labor, Boosts Production

The Kaduna ginger project, organized by the Christian Rural and Urban Development Association of Nigeria (CRUDAN) in collaboration with the Fair Labor Association, has been commended for its success in reducing child labor and revitalizing ginger production in Kaduna. During a workshop, Mr.
Joseph Gyandi, CRUDAN's Executive Director, noted a significant change in community attitudes towards child labor, with awareness rising from 2% at the project's start to approximately 87% by the end. The project has introduced healthier ginger seedlings, which have helped farmers recover from disease outbreaks and improve their livelihoods.
Dr. Jean Appia highlighted that the project has strengthened the capacity of ginger producers through training in good agricultural practices and human rights due diligence.
Mr. Michael Agon reported that child labor among workers under 14 has dropped to zero, and school enrollment has increased by 38%.
The project also improved access to financial services, with village savings and loan associations increasing from 10% to 51% by the end of the project.
