Stakeholders tackle unruly passengers as NCAA orders phone switch-off during take-off, landing

The National Civil Aviation Security Committee held an emergency meeting in Abuja to address recent incidents of unruly passenger behavior. The meeting was prompted by an incident involving Fuji music star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, known as KWAM 1, on a ValueJet aircraft on August 5.

KWAM 1's conduct led to the suspension of two pilots by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). The musician was seen drinking from a flask onboard, which led to a confrontation with flight attendants.

Following the incident, KWAM 1 was placed on a 6-month list of individuals banned from boarding commercial flights due to unruly behavior. Additionally, an altercation between a passenger and an Ibom Air hostess on August 10 resulted in the passenger being arraigned in court.

The Minister of Aviation announced the withdrawal of criminal charges against the passenger after consultation with critical stakeholders in the aviation sector. The incidents have highlighted the need for improved airport security protocols and passenger behavior awareness.
