Stakeholders Demand Stricter COVID-19 Measures in Nigeria

Stakeholders in Nigeria have urged for the reinforcement of COVID-19 safety measures in schools and workplaces amid rising infection rates and growing public complacency regarding health protocols. This call was made during an interview on Friday in Abuja, following recent confirmed COVID-19 cases reported by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Cross River State, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of the virus.

Observations from various schools and workplaces indicate a significant decline in adherence to hygiene practices, with handwashing stations largely absent and little regard for physical distancing. Mr.

Naim Magaji from Dakwa Primary School attributed this decline to reduced enforcement by relevant authorities, while Mr. Bless Kenneth highlighted economic hardships that prevent families from prioritizing hygiene materials.

Public health expert Dr. Sam Akanni emphasized that basic hygiene practices, such as handwashing and wearing face masks, are essential in reducing the transmission of respiratory infections, including COVID-19, especially in crowded environments.
