Rivers Assembly Supports State Police Bill for Nigeria

The Rivers State House of Assembly voted unanimously to support the bill for the creation of state police in Nigeria during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule. This decision aligns the Assembly with those of Osun and Edo, which have also backed the bill.

The National Assembly transmitted the bill to state Houses of Assembly on September 16, 2026, and it requires approval from at least 24 of the 36 state assemblies to proceed to the President for assent. The proposed amendment seeks to establish a decentralized policing system, enhancing local law enforcement and ensuring safeguards for its operation.

Speaker Amaewhule emphasized the Assembly's support for President Bola Tinubu's efforts to improve citizen safety through state police. He referenced Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution, which outlines the process for constitutional amendments, and noted that the bill preserves the Federal Police Service until state police services are established and operational.
