Edo Assembly Approves State Police Bill for Local Security

The Edo State House of Assembly has unanimously approved a constitutional amendment bill to establish State police, aimed at providing legal backing for enhanced local security. The bill was forwarded to the Assembly by the Clerk of the National Assembly and was passed during a plenary session in Benin City.

Majority Leader Hon. Osezua Sunday Ojezelle led the debate, emphasizing that the amendment would create an additional framework to tackle insecurity in Nigeria. Other lawmakers, including Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian, Hon. Kingsley Ugabi, and Hon. Maria Edeko, expressed support, highlighting that the initiative would improve grassroots policing and enable quicker responses to local security threats.

The motion for the bill's passage was seconded by Minority Leader Hon. Natasha Osawaru Irobosa and was adopted unanimously. This approval is part of the ongoing constitutional amendment process, which requires the concurrence of at least two-thirds of the 36 state Houses of Assembly after passing through the National Assembly to become law.
