U.S. Lawmaker Backs Nigeria's State Police Amendment

U.S. Congressman Riley Moore expressed support for the Nigerian Senate's recent approval of a constitutional amendment to establish state police, which he believes will strengthen the protection of citizens, especially Christians facing persecution in Nigeria.

Moore made these remarks on his X account shortly after the Senate passed the bill aimed at decentralizing police authority, allowing states to operate their own police services alongside the Nigeria Police Force. He has previously raised concerns about attacks on Christians in Nigeria and has advocated for reforms.

The proposed legislation requires ratification by at least two-thirds of state houses to become law. Moore praised President Bola Tinubu for his support of the proposal, noting that the amendment would empower states to protect their citizens and reduce reliance on decision-makers in Abuja.

The bill includes safeguards against abuse, stipulating that state police cannot be used against individuals or groups solely for criticizing state governments.
