Shettima Advocates for Bonds to Fund Infrastructure Projects

The Federal Government has called on state governments to responsibly leverage capital market bonds to finance long-term infrastructure projects. Vice President Kashim Shettima made this declaration at the National Capital Market Conference 2026 in Abuja, where he unveiled the Nigerian Capital Market Master Plan 2.0.
This plan aims to expand the capital market from approximately N250 trillion to N750 trillion by 2036. Shettima emphasized that access to capital market financing could enhance fiscal discipline and accountability in public spending.
He stated that the government would collaborate with state governors to promote the responsible use of the capital market through structured bonds and transparency. SEC Director-General Dr Emomotimi Agama noted that the initiative would deepen market participation and strengthen the capital market's integrity.
Shettima highlighted the significant growth of Nigeria's capital market since May 2023, attributing it to various reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy and unification of the foreign exchange market.
