NiMet Warns of Thunderstorms Across 27 States on October 1

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms across at least 27 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on October 1, 2026. NiMet urged residents in affected areas to take precautions throughout the day.
The forecast indicates that thunderstorms will begin in the northern states early in the morning, with the risk spreading by afternoon and evening to include states such as Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, Sokoto, Bauchi, Kano, Adamawa, and Taraba. In the central region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rainfall anticipated in Benue, the FCT, Plateau, Nasarawa, and Niger States.
Southern states will experience overcast conditions with light rain in parts of Akwa Ibom, intensifying to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall later in the day across various southern states. NiMet advised residents to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid flooded roads, secure loose outdoor items, and unplug sensitive electrical appliances.
Additionally, airline operators were advised to obtain specific weather data before flight operations. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is also conducting flood preparedness exercises in Adamawa State.
