Sultan of Sokoto Declares Islamic New Year Holiday

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, declared Tuesday, June 16, 1448AH, as the first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year. This announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultan's Council, Prof. Sambo Junaidu.

In conjunction with this declaration, the Sokoto State Government announced a public holiday on the same day to allow Muslims in the state to celebrate the commencement of the new Islamic year. Abubakar Bawa, the Director General of Media and Publicity for Governor Ahmadu Aliyu, conveyed the governor's message urging the people of Sokoto State to use this occasion for fervent prayers for peace, especially in light of the insecurity affecting parts of Sokoto State and the country at large.

Governor Aliyu emphasized the need for collective efforts to address security challenges and encouraged Muslims to reflect on their lives and seek forgiveness from Allah.
