Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Respectful Politics During NDC Visit

The Sultan of Sokoto met with Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, urging all politicians to abandon divisive rhetoric and insults ahead of 2027 elections.
At his Sokoto palace on Monday, Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, hosted Peter Obi and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who respectively serve as presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Also present was Dr Shamsu Haido, the party's governorship aspirant in Sokoto State.
The Sultan took the opportunity to issue guidance on how political competition ought to be conducted throughout Nigeria. He emphasized that both candidates and their backers must demonstrate mutual respect and steer clear of provocative rhetoric.
While the Sultan acknowledged candidates' legitimate entitlement to campaign for their platforms and solicit voter backing, he made clear such rights require responsible exercise. Abusive speech, character assassination, and incitement to violence represented areas of particular concern.
The Sultan warned that such conduct threatens cohesion and national peace. His message highlighted the continuing influence wielded by traditional and religious authorities in setting Nigeria's political climate.
The NDC team's journey to the palace represented part of broader efforts to cultivate relationships with key figures before 2027's general elections approach. Kwankwaso, according to available reports, thanked the Sultan for his hospitality and noted the value of engaging directly with this Islamic leader and NSCIA President-General.
The delegation utilized this platform to articulate how their party intends to tackle Nigeria's pressing concerns. Dr Shamsu Haido's inclusion rounded out what amounted to comprehensive contact with an institution of immense traditional influence across Nigeria.
During political seasons, campaign fervor frequently peaks, yet the Sultan's exhortation toward unity and disciplined dialogue carries particular significance. By directing his message at this particular group, he underscored expectations that institutional and political figures alike should exemplify measured rhetoric.
The palace engagement thus demonstrated how traditional establishments continue shaping the character of Nigeria's electoral discourse.
