Sultanate Council Sets Date for Rabi’ul Awwal Moon Sighting

The Sultanate Council, Sokoto State Chapter, has declared Thursday, August 13, 2026, as the designated day for Muslims to search for the new moon of Rabi’ul Awwal, corresponding to the 29th day of Safar 1448AH. This announcement was made in a statement by Prof.

Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Wednesday, August 12. The council urged Muslims to observe the sky for the crescent and report any confirmed sightings to their nearest district or village head.

The statement emphasized that sightings would be communicated through traditional leadership to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs. The council encouraged participation in this moon-sighting exercise as a religious duty, concluding with a prayer for divine assistance in fulfilling this obligation.
