Super Eagles Mourn Passing of Coach Festus Onigbinde

Festus Adegboyega Onigbinde, a respected figure in Nigerian football and former coach of the Super Eagles, has passed away. His family announced his death via a WhatsApp message, with Bolad Adesuyi expressing condolences and honoring Onigbinde's contributions to football.

He was known for leading Nigeria's national team, then called the Green Eagles, to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, where they lost 3-1 to Cameroon. Onigbinde returned to coach the Super Eagles in 2002, taking over from the late Shuaibu Amodu and guiding Nigeria to the FIFA World Cup, where the team exited at the group stage after defeats to Argentina and Sweden, and a draw against England.

Throughout his career, Onigbinde remained active in football development, serving as a technical instructor for the Confederation of African Football and FIFA. He was 88 years old, having been born on March 5.
