Sweden Sets Conditions for Student Residence Permits 2026

The Swedish government has published five conditions that foreign nationals must fulfill to obtain a residence permit for studies in Sweden in 2026. These requirements, released by the Swedish Migration Agency, apply to students pursuing higher or accredited programs.

The conditions include: 1) holding a valid passport; 2) being finally admitted to full-time studies, which requires completing at least 30 credits per semester for universities and a minimum of 20 teaching hours per week for other programs; 3) having paid any required tuition fees before applying; 4) possessing or applying for comprehensive health insurance, specifically for studies lasting less than one year; and 5) demonstrating financial self-sufficiency for the duration of the residence permit, including the ability to support any dependants. These conditions are applicable to all foreign nationals requiring a residence permit, primarily those from outside the European Union.

Applicants must ensure all requirements are met before submission, as mere admission is insufficient without the necessary documentation.
