Bandit Attack in Taraba Leaves 50 Dead, Bodies Recovered

The death toll from a bandit attack on the Binnari community in eastern Taraba State has risen to at least 50, with additional bodies recovered from a river where residents drowned while trying to escape the attackers. The assault occurred shortly after Friday prayers, with gunmen arriving on motorcycles, killing residents, looting, and setting fire to shops and market stalls.
Survivors reported that many fled towards the river, resulting in several drowning incidents. Bashir Mamuda Musa, a resident, noted that seven bodies were found on Friday, while another 43 were discovered on Saturday.
Abdullahi Zakari confirmed that many residents drowned during their escape. The Taraba State Police Command is conducting ongoing search operations in the area, with police spokesperson Victor Msheliza stating that bodies believed to be residents who drowned have been found.
Amnesty International reported a slightly higher death toll of 52 and criticized the authorities for their failure to protect rural communities from such attacks.
