NEFGAD Sues Nigerian Government Over Tax Law Alterations

The civic advocacy group NEFGAD has initiated legal action against the Nigerian government in the ECOWAS Court over alleged unlawful alterations to Nigeria's recently gazetted tax law, which was passed with presidential assent. The case, filed on October 26, follows NEFGAD's earlier correspondence with President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly, demanding an independent investigation into the matter.

NEFGAD's lead counsel, Elvi Ejeta, expressed concerns regarding changes made to the tax legislation post-assent, which they argue undermine democratic principles and the rule of law. The group seeks several remedies, including a judicial review of the legislative process, a declaration that the alterations are unauthorized, and an annulment of the amended provisions.

They also request an injunction to restrain the enforcement of the disputed provisions and compensation for Nigerians adversely affected by the changes. NEFGAD emphasizes its commitment to defending democratic institutions and upholding constitutional standards in Nigeria's legislative processes.
