Tax Ombud Resolves Eight Disputes, Urges Public Awareness

The Office of the Tax Ombud, established under the Tax Ombud Nigeria Act of 2025 and beginning operations on January 1, 2026, has addressed approximately 20 genuine tax dispute cases since its inception. Dr John Nwabueze, the Chief Executive, reported that eight cases were resolved within the statutory timeline, while 12 remain under investigation.
He noted that many Nigerians are unaware of the office and its free dispute-resolution services, which complement tax and revenue authorities without interfering in tax collection. Nwabueze provided details on the complaints received, stating that 12 were submitted through the online case management portal, two via email, and the rest through the call center.
He emphasized that all resolved cases were completed within the 14-day timeframe mandated by law. To enhance accessibility, the office plans to upgrade its toll-free call center and establish offices across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
Nwabueze identified awareness as the biggest challenge facing the agency.
